St Clares : How to read the church
Return to How to read the church Consecration crosses mark the points on the walls where a church was annointed when it was consecrated. The ritual of consecration is intended to sanctify the building and dedicate it to God. It therefore separates it from the 'ordinary' space outside, and differentiates it from other buildings. There are 12 consecration crosses. These crosses should not be removed as they are proof that the space within the four walls has been consecrated. (Perishable crosses, such as wood are not allowed in the Roman Catholic Church)
