St Clares : How to read the church
Return to How to read the church Music at St Clare's : The Organ The organ was built by Messrs Steele and Kaye of Beerslam, Staffs with all mechanisms dating from 1892 and renovated in 1920 by Henry Willis & Sons. It is acknowledged as being tonally very fine. There is only one other of a similar make in the Liverpool Diocese (St Marie's Southport). The original intention is described in the Liverpool Daily Post ( June 5th 1890 ) : 'The organ is to be placed over a portion of the Northern Chapel. There is no tower, but a large bell turret rises in the angle formed by the organ chamber and the nave'. Bishop Dobson, returning to St Clare's as Parish Priest in 1922, found that a west gallery had been built ' and that the organ had been transferred to that position , with the result that the west window was completely covered and consequently made the whole church darker'. He arranged that the organ be transferred and re-erected in its original position by H.E.Hamblett, articled organ builder of Liverpool. This work was completed on 14th November 1926. Restoration of the organ and electrification of the organ blowing was carried out in time for the golden jubilee of the church in 1940 at a cost of £112.
