Stained Glass - The Nativity

The Nativity window  is located in the Lady Chapel.

The Centre Panel below :This depicts the birth of Jesus. The baby Jesus,  his head surrounded by a halo . To be biblically correct, Jesus should appear wrapped tightly in cloth. However, many artists felt it would make a more affecting scene to portray Jesus out of these constraints

Centre Panel Above : Angels and angelic dreams are mentioned in various stories associated with the Nativity . In one the Angel of the Lord announcing Christ's Nativity to the shepherds as they tended their sheep in the hills of Bethlehem. The scene has been the inspiration for many carols and christmas cards and may explain why many angels of medieval and Renaissance art seem to have a heraldic function.

Centre Panel Middle :Jesus surrounded by Angels with musical instruments. Also in side panels (off picture). Since the primary function of angels is to praise God, it was only natural that these figures should be included in the Nativity scene.

Side Panel, right below : Mary, the mother of Jesus who is almost always portrayed in Blue. There is a halo around the head of Mary.A halo appears in most church art around the person of particular spiritual power.

Side Panel, right above : Joseph, the husband of Mary , foster-father of Jesus, and protector of the Holy Family. Joseph is usually shown with brown cloak.

Side Panel Left  : Angels appeared to a group of Shepherds outside Jerusalem to announce that the Messiah had been born that night in Bethlehem, and they went to visit the new king. The shepherds are shown in the left panel.

The Window is dedicated to the memory of Ellen Watkinson
