St Francis

St Francis of Assisi is depicted in the church as follows :

1. A Statue above the west entrance porch

2. On one of the panels on the triptych on the east wall above the altar.

St Francis of Assisi inspired Clare in her life and in the creation of the order of Poor Clare Nuns. Clare was known for her loyalty to Francis.

Francis was the founder of the Franciscan order of friars. The simple rule of the order emphasised extreme poverty. A scene often depicted is Francis preaching to the birds and to the animals. This suggests God's care for the whole of creation, and not only people. See the bird on the triptych painted panel.(below)

St Francis is known for his empathy with the troubled, his joy, and his wisdom. As he would often say :

" What a man is in the sight of God, so much he is, and no more "
